October Ramblings with a Sore Head.....

Image
HELLO  from a wet and windy Scotland this morning, where I am now well and truly into the winter routine of having ponies stabled at nights and the resulting mucking out getting my mornings off to an early and energetic start. There's nothing quite like going out into the barn at first light to be greeted by those three bright little faces, though, so no complaints from me. October was a slow month for me creatively,  mainly because I was aiming to have plenty of stitchy knitty time at the end of the month, until a knock on the head put pay to that! However, I've a few things in progress to show and lots of plans for November, so have a look...... CALICO PUZZLE QUILT:  The quilting is not my favourite part of making a quilt and I can usually  find no end of reasons for putting it off. However, I'd run out of excuses for this bee block quilt so set to it in trepidation.  I love my workhorse sewing machine although  it does struggling with th...

Cogs, Liberty and Socks - a September Furtle

Image
Well, SEPTEMBER! It was nice knowing you but how did you manage to flit by so fast? September is one of my favourite months but, oh my goodness, I felt like I blinked and then missed it this year. But it was a good month in many ways and I trust it was for you too. Here's a quick burst through our doings as we furtle through it, prompted by Mini Archie . September  was bitten into by a fabulous holiday week and the start of English tutoring again but I still managed to get some stitchy-knitty time in. My creative highlight was definitely the Edinburgh Modern Quilt Guild workshop we were lucky to have with the fabulous Jenny Haynes (Pappersaxsten) this last weekend.  It was the second time Jenny had taught us and this time she deconstructed her Modern Times quilt to allow us to create our own designs if we wished, using the various components . Jenny's original quilt This was an introduction to using freezer paper for me (love it!) and much needed revision on sewi...

A Rabbit, a Birthday, a Mountain and a Protest: August Furtling

Image
Oh dear, this could be the shortest bog ever as I am rushing to meet this month's Furtling deadline. Just back from holibobs, there  seems to be so much to catch up with so I'd better stop wittering and get down to business. Probably the most fun thing to have happened in our household this past month was the arrival of a new inmate, crafted brilliantly by @bettis_stitches in Germany. Rabbit, a beige needlefelted  collie made in memory of the simplest collie I've ever had in my life, arrived as a surprise gift for my husband as he and the original Rab(bit) had had a unique bond. I did doubt my sanity as David isn't known for his frivolity and yet he has taken mini Rabbit to his heart, takes him on his cycling adventures and business trips,  and has even given him his own IG account, @the_new_adventures_of_rabbit! Who would have thought! Anyway, ever safety conscious , the new little chap is delightful!       Rabbit in a Premier Inn somewhere o...

Furtling through July and a new obsession.

Image
Thank you to Mini Archie for the prompt to furtle back through July but oh dear, I have pitifully little to share from the crafty side of my life this time. Having said that, I am actually fairly impressed that I've achieved anything indoors this past month as my sewing space usually goes into shut down over the summer. But the reason is .... I've discovered garment sewing! I think I mentioned last time that I'd always wanted to make my own clothes but the faff of how I was taught to sew put me off. But the new generation of designers, approaches and techniques have made the whole process, I think, more accessible to the likes of me and so I've been having a ball building up a few skills. 100 Acts of Sewing patterns have been really instrumental in this and July started with my third Shirt No 1 but this time I felt brave enough to customise the fit a little more. I'm now itching to make another as I had a lightbulb moment as to how to improve the...
